How this works

State minimums are set by legislatures, not by what a hospital charges, and in most states they sit far below what a household with a house and savings needs. We are not printing any state's numbers here because we have not verified them — look yours up on your state's own insurance department site, then come back and compare it to the figure below.

Assets = home equity + savings and investments + other assets.
Exposure benchmark = assets + one year of income, as a cushion for lost wages and legal costs.
Your limits cover it if your bodily injury per-accident number is at or above that benchmark.
We pick the lowest tier from 100/300/100, 250/500/250 and 500/500/250 whose per-accident figure clears the benchmark.
A teen driver, or three or more drivers in the household, moves the recommendation up one tier — more drivers, more chances.
Umbrella needed = benchmark − the recommended per-accident limit, rounded up to the next $1,000,000.
We flag property damage under $100,000 separately: a two- or three-car collision reaches that quickly.

The one-year income cushion, the $100,000 property damage floor and the tier bump are rules of thumb we have chosen so the arithmetic is checkable — not carrier underwriting rules. Tier names like 100/300/100 are shorthand in thousands of dollars.

Not modelled: uninsured and underinsured motorist limits (worth matching to your liability limits, and a separate conversation), medical payments, and what the next tier costs. Moving up a tier is usually a far smaller premium increase than people expect, because the claims that reach high limits are rare.
